Hugh McQueen (1800-1855) attended the University for one year in 1819 and was a trustee from 1833 to 1845. A lawyer, he served in both the NC House of Commons (1829, 1831, 1832) and the NC Senate (1834-35). During the 1830s he edited several North Carolina newspapers, and he pressed for educational reforms in North Carolina's constitutional convention of 1835. McQueen became the state's attorney general in 1840, resigning two years later and moving to Texas (Dictionary of North Carolina Biography 4:188).
